Bangladesh delegation’s preparatory meeting for 12th GFMD held
The government of Bangladesh and the civil society will be organizing a Policy Forum in Ecuador on the recent issues on migration, in particular focusing on the implementation status of Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM).
In this regard, the civil society representatives met with the senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at an event on Wednesday, 16 January 2020, afternoon to set Bangladesh position and preparation for the upcoming Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD).
GFMD has been a state-led, but not state-only, platform that has been influencing the global discourse on migration and development by engaging multi-stakeholders in an informal and non-binding exchange of ideas, innovations and practices.
The Twelfth GFMD Summit will be held on 20-24 January, 2020 in Quito, Ecuador with thematic focus on— “Sustainable approaches to human mobility: Upholding rights, strengthening state agency, and advancing development through partnerships and collective action”.
During the last GFMD in Marrakech in2018, countries around the world signed a treaty on Global Compact on Migration. So during this GFMD, among other issues they will be discussing about the implementation status of GCM.
The members of the Bangladesh delegation to GFMD also discussed the different theme and sub-theme areas of the twelfth GFMD and how they will promote the Bangladesh position and promote migrant’s rights in global forum. They also decided that civil society platform- the CSOs for Global Commitment on Migration (CGCM) will be organizing a Policy Forum in Ecuador in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and with support from PROKAS/UK Aid. The Policy Forum will focus on the implementation challenges and way forwards for the of Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
The CGCM members, government officials and development partners participated in the event. The participants in the meeting included, Ms. Nahida Sobhan, DG and Ambassador of Bangladesh to Jordan, Nazrul Islam, DG of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from the government side. From the civil society Syeed Ahamed, CEO, Institute of Informatics and Development (IID), Sumaiya Islam, Executive Director of Bangladesh Nari Sramik Kendra (BNSK), Shakirul Islam, Chairman, Ovibashi Karmi Unnayan Program (OKUP), Ms. Shirin Lira, IBP Manager and Gender and Social Inclusion Advisor, PROKAS, Marina Sultana, Director Programme of Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) and Md. Owasim Uddin Bhuyan, Journalist of Migration News were present in the meeting.
